A Word About Addictive Substances & Behavior
People who engage in addictive substances display compulsive behavior and gradually lose control of their lives. They continue to drink or use drugs even when they know it will lead to negative consequences. They tend to have low self-esteem and almost inevitably suffer from anxiety and or depression.
If someone in your life engages in addictive substances, you have experienced their extreme behavior, ranging from depression to exhilaration. You probably have also experienced their state of denial (“I can quit anytime” or “I don’t have a problem”), you are probably also familiar with their dishonesty, frequent disappointments, and the series of ruined relationships. These are hallmark behaviors when a person engages in addictive substances.
Chronic misuse of substances produce long lasting damage in many areas of brain functioning. The capacity for abstract thinking, problem solving, memory, and physical dexterity are just a few.
